Treasure Island Grocery Chain to Close in October, Company Says

The stores have been open for 55 years

After being in business for more than 55 years, the iconic Treasure Island grocery store chain will shutter its doors for good next month.

According to the companies, employees were told of the impending closure on Friday. The stores will begin liquidation sales this weekend, and stores will close permanently on Oct. 12.

The company has been a Chicago staple since 1963, and still has seven remaining locations, including six in Chicago. It remains family owned, but will soon close its doors for good.

“We made the very difficult decision to wind down operations as a company,” CEO Maria Kamberos told employees, according to the Chicago Tribune. “Unfortunately, given the current industry conditions, it has been impossible for us to continue to operate without losing money.”
