Most Amtrak lines will resume full service on Friday after being impacted by bitterly cold temperatures in the Chicago-area, but track damage will prevent at least two trains from getting back to normal.
According to the agency, Midwest corridor trains will be back in service for the most part on Friday, including the Hiawatha Service between Chicago and Milwaukee and the Downstate Illinois, which is comprised of the Lincoln Service, Carl Sandburg, and Illinois Zephyr trains.
A track closure will limit service on the Illini and Saluki Trains, as well as the City of New Orleans, which runs between the Windy City and the Big Easy.
Amtrak will operate southbound City of New Orleans and Illini/Saluki trains on Friday, but will be unable to run northbound trains as crews work to repair damage caused by the derailment of a Canadian National freight train on Wednesday night near suburban Harvey.
It is not known when the northbound trains will resume service.
The damage caused by the derailment is also impacting service on the Metra Electric and South Shore lines, as the derailment damaged overhead wiring and substations needed to power the trains. Both lines, which suspended service on Wednesday and Thursday, will not run on Friday.
