Cubs Skipper Joe Maddon Reveals Slogan for 2019 Season

Maddon is hoping to lead the Cubs back to the postseason as he enters the final season of his contract

What to Know

  • The Cubs won 95 games last season, but lost in the NL Wild Card Game to the Rockies.
  • Maddon is entering the final season of a five-year deal he signed with the Cubs in 2014.

The Chicago Cubs are gathering in Arizona for the start of spring training, and as the team tries to erase the memories of last season’s playoff disappointment, manager Joe Maddon is debuting a new slogan.

Maddon, who is entering the last year of his contract with the Cubs, has led the club to four straight playoff appearances, but after not getting out of the wild card round last season, he wants the team to buy in from day one and prevent a repeat performance.

“Own It Now,” Maddon said when asked about this year’s slogan. “(It’s about) thinking about owning the exact moment that you’re in.”

The slogan is aimed at making sure that the team avoids the struggles that it dealt with down the stretch last season. The Cubs blew a five-game lead in the division before losing a one-game playoff against the Milwaukee Brewers, then lost the National League Wild Card Game at Wrigley Field to the Colorado Rockies.

This season, with Maddon on the last year of his deal and with the front office banking on players bouncing back from subpar seasons, the skipper is planning a more hands-on approach with his coaching, and he hopes that will be the magic formula as the Cubs try to get back to the postseason for the fifth straight year.
