Authorities are warning residents in the southwest Chicago suburbs of a recent ruse burglary targeting an elderly woman in Palos Township.
On Feb. 10, a man approached a 94-year-old woman at her home in the 600 block of West 127th Place and chatted with her as if he knew her, the Cook County sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The woman invited the man into her home to continue the conversation, and as she made tea, they continued to talk, she told NBC 5. She remembers the man wandering around the home and admiring her things before he abruptly said he needed to leave.
Hours later, she realized that she had been robbed, and that $1,000 in cash was missing from her home.
The woman believes that a second man entered her home through a side door she'd left unlocked.
Anyone with information about the burglary was asked to contact detectives at (708) 865-489, and Cook County sheriff's deputies also had several recommendations to avoid falling victim to a ruse burglary.
Police advise the public not to let anyone into your home unless you're expecting them, and also to talk to people through your door if at all possible.
