Ice Buildup Closes Navy Pier Ferris Wheel Wednesday

"For the safety of our guests and staff, the Centennial Wheel and other Pier Park attractions must occasionally close due to weather conditions."

Ice buildup from this week's freezing rain forced Navy Pier's Centennial Wheel to close Wednesday.

Freezing rain, snow and winds gusting up to 45 mph across the Chicago area were the latest in a series of potentially dangerous conditions in the forecast.

A Navy Pier spokesman said Wednesday's closure will allow the iconic Ferris wheel ample time to melt and prepare for Thursday's pre-ordered free rides for Valentine’s Day and National Ferris Wheel Day.

"For the safety of our guests and staff, the Centennial Wheel and other Pier Park attractions must occasionally close due to weather conditions," the Pier said in a statement on its website.

Typical Centennial Wheel hours through March 31 are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.- 10 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Sunday.
