Metra Electric Line Offers Discounts on Monthly Passes After Service Interruptions

Metra's Electric Line was out of commission for five days due to cold weather, freight train derailment

After suspending service for five days and running a modified schedule for an additional week, Metra Electric customers are going to get a discount on monthly pass rates.

The agency announced this week that Electric Line riders will be eligible for a 15 percent discount on their monthly pass in the month of April.

“We are taking this rare step of providing discounts because of the unusual severity and length of the service disruption on the Metra Electric Line,” CEO Jim Derwinski said in a statement.

According to the agency, the discount will only apply to monthly passes purchased at Millennium Station ticket windows, and will only be valid on the Metra Electric Line. Passengers who normally purchase the passes on the Ventra app will need to buy paper passes for the month of April to get the discount.

Those passes will be stamped by ticket agents to indicate that they are only valid on Electric Line trains.

The discount comes after cold weather and a freight train derailment caused services to be suspended on the line for five days. After the suspension, Metra continued to operate on a reduced schedule, and only last week announced that it would go back to a full-on schedule for riders.
